History

The Sutter County Jail was established in 1850, shortly after the county was formed as part of the Gold Rush era. The original jail was a small, wooden structure located in Yuba City, the county seat. As the county grew, so did the need for a larger and more secure jail.

In 1870, a new jail was built on the same site as the original. This two-story brick building featured reinforced walls, iron bars, and a central tower. It housed both men and women prisoners and also served as the county courthouse.

20th Century Expansions and Renovations

In 1955, a new jail annex was built behind the courthouse to accommodate the growing inmate population. The annex added cell blocks, a medical unit, and a kitchen. In the 1970s, the original jail building was renovated to improve security and living conditions for inmates.

Modern Era

In 1994, Sutter County voters approved a bond measure to fund the construction of a new jail. The new jail opened in 1998 and is located adjacent to the courthouse and jail annex. It is a modern, two-story facility that meets state and federal standards for correctional institutions.

The new jail features:

• 256 beds
• Separate housing units for male, female, and high-security inmates
• A medical unit
• A library
• A recreation yard
• A booking and release center

Current Operations

Today, the Sutter County Jail is operated by the Sutter County Sheriff's Office. The jail staff includes sworn deputies, civilian employees, and medical professionals. The jail provides a safe and humane environment for inmates while also maintaining public safety.

In addition to housing county inmates, the jail also houses inmates from other jurisdictions on a contract basis. The jail is part of the Sheriff's Office's overall law enforcement mission to protect and serve the community of Sutter County.
